Installing solar panels in your home can be a great way to reduce your energy bills and also do your bit to help the environment. Most people don't need convincing of the benefits of generating their own power and hot water from solar panels, but what stops them from making the switch to this natural energy source is usually the cost, and whether they will actually see a return on their investment. If you've been thinking that installing solar panels in your home might be a good idea, here are some of the things you need to think about.

Once a home owner has installed an average sized solar power system into their home, they could typically expect to save around $200 a year on their fuel bills. This sounds like a pretty good saving, which most households would be very happy with. However, when you consider that it would probably cost in the region of $15-20,000 to install the solar system in the first place, all of a sudden it doesn't seem like such a great investment after all. But things get more interesting when you take into account all the figures.

It may cost several thousands of dollars to install solar panels in your home, but you don't have to foot the bill on your own. Thanks to various contributions, rebates and tax breaks from the federal and state governments, as well as regional energy companies, you might only need to find about 10-20% of the actual cost of installing your new solar power system. When you consider this, an investment of $2000 to help you save $200 dollars every year doesn't look so bad, and you could actually be in pocket after about 10 years.

Plus, energy isn't getting any cheaper. With much of our power still coming from resources that will eventually run out, traditional energy prices will be a lot more expensive in ten years time, than they are today. All of which means an even greater return on your solar power investment as your savings increase.

As with any investment, it can take time before you get your money back, and you might want to move before your solar panels are in profit. However, seeing as homes that benefit from natural energy can be more valuable, you shouldn't lose out. Of course, you could put your money in the bank, or even into stocks and shares instead. But if you take full advantage of the various incentive schemes that are available, the kind of returns you could get from helping to save the planet are a lot more attractive.

Some home owners would rather use solar power than the typical electricity received through utility companies. In solar panels, the cell collection creates a flat panel that converts light to electricity. One cell on its own does not do very much, but a large group of them can create enough power to supply electricity to the average size home or office.

The cost of making a home completely solar powered would be higher than most people can pay. The savings afterward would take many years to recoup. As electricity bills also continue to get higher, more people are searching for methods that will reduce this cost. Many turn to the clean method of solar gathering but find that the initial cost is too great, even considering the lowered utility bill.

Using panels in this way draws energy from sunlight. It is considered an exceptionally environmentally sound way to gather energy. They are also considered an extremely environmentally safe way to collect that energy. The solar cells are semi-conductors shaped like wafers that work to convert sunlight into electricity by what is called the photovoltaic effect. Electrons are knocked out and drawn into current when photons hit the surface of the panels. Metal contacts inside the panel use the dislocated electrons to form electricity.

When the possibility of laying long high voltage cables is out of the question, solar cells are used. An example of usage would be the satellite equipment in space. The space stations have been supplied with solar power for many years now.

This method of collecting electricity is environmentally healthy and people friendly. This is a clean method of powering electronics in remote places where there would otherwise be no way to generate it. There are other methods used by people all over the world. Solar power is one of the most popular and interest in it continues to rise.

There are a few advantages and a few disadvantages to utilizing the way of gathering and producing electricity. Advantages are generally environmental, as an efficient and clean method. A disadvantage, and the main one, is the cost of installation. Solar panels have to be used in large groups to produce the maximum amount of electricity. Also, producing the panels requires facilities vastly larger in space than nuclear or fossil fuel plants.

These panels usually come with a standard 25 year warranty, are extremely durable and can withstand severe weather. They can be integrated into the existing shingles on a roof or there are peel and stick laminates that are also available. They are rated by wattage for quality.

To lower the usage of electricity to your home or business or to get off the grid entirely, solar panels are the answer. PV panels supply electricity through photovoltaic power from the sun.

There are two ways to economize by using a solar energy system. The first benefit is significantly cutting your electricity bills. Remaining linked to the grid means you can earn some money from selling any extra electricity your panels produce. With installation costs still being very high, the typical residential solar power system takes around 18 months to have paid for itself - although making your own solar panels is a less expensive option.

Using solar panels can help to lessen your carbon footprint since solar electricity is green (renewable) energy and does not emit harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) or other pollutants. The typical solar energy system is capable of saving around 2650 lb of CO2 per year - around 30 tons over its lifetime. According to Tony Juniper (director of Friends of the Earth), the next industrial revolution will be shaped by these clean green technologies.

Federal law allows for individuals creating solar power, to be paid by the utilities, after linking to the grid, for any surplus electricity produced. The system which accounts for a solar energy system's electricity production is called a net meter, and allows solar panel owners to sell excess electricity back into the grid. The most common of these is a single, reversible meter. On-site energy demand is filled first, as the solar energy system produces electricity. Then, instead of storing excess electricity in a battery storage system, any extra kilowatts are fed into the grid, reversing the electric meter. The utility company will credit the homeowner at the end of each metering period, and will usually send payment out monthly or annually.

An average of 164W of solar energy per square meter is delivered to the Earth's surface by the sun. In truth, covering around 1% of the Sahara desert in solar panels could create enough electricity to power the entire planet. That's what makes solar energy so incredible - we'll never use the amount that is available, it's more than enough. But because the energy sent out by the sun arrives as a mixture of light and heat, it can't be used as it is to directly power a car or a computer. However, the sun's energy can be converted into a power we can use, such as electricity, by solar panels.

Solar cells are the basis of solar panels. Because the electricity generated by an individual solar cell is not sufficient for most purposes, solar cells are linked to form solar panels. Solar panels are also called Photo Voltaic or PV modules and are produced in various types and sizes; the solar panel most typically used produces up to 50 Watts and is made from silicon solar cells. Solar panels may also be interconnected to produce more energy.

It may not surprise some people that we in America use more energy than any other country. Even though the US accounts for barely 5% of the entire planet's population, we are responsible more than one quarter of the world's energy usage. Israel at this time has a 100mw solar power plant which is able to provide more than 200,000 people with electricity; however they now have plans to put together an even bigger one - which will serve at least a million more people. Half of all solar panels produced worldwide are found in Japan, while Bavaria has the biggest solar power system. When considering these figures it's clear that America has a long way to go to reach the full potential of solar power.

Many people find it preferable to make their own solar panels. Since installation of a solar system for the typical American home can cost between $7,000 and $40,000 the popularity of DIY solar panels is growing. And it is less complicated than it may seem. For safe and effective DIY solar panels it's imperative that you use the right instruction guide. Going with the DIY solar panel option means not just long-term utility bill savings, but it's a way to save thousands of dollars in initial outlay.

Solar energy is without a doubt today's number one alternative energy choice. It is no wonder then that one of the most searched for terms on the internet is cheap solar panels.

With the environmental disaster we are seeing unfold off the gulf of Mexico (The BP oil spill) more and more as a society we are finding our consciousness pricked into looking for cleaner and greener ways to help the environment.

For most people the idea of having their own solar system is indeed desirable, but there has always been the major stumbling block of the enormous cost of the solar panels.

Having a solar system installed can cost many thousands of dollars, money that many households simply do not have to spare, no matter how much they stand to save in the long run or how much they want to help the reduce their carbon footprints.

This alternative comes in the form of a DIY (do it yourself) kit. Now I'm sure some of you just tuned out at the thought of building your own solar panels, sounds complicated doesn't it? Well surprisingly it isn't, in fact it's all most child play.

The kits come in the form of an easy to follow video series and instruction manual which you can downloaded in a matter of seconds online

All the materials you need to build your own panels are available from most hardware stores (tip: save even more money by sourcing the parts from your local salvage or junkyard). Armed with the most basic handyman skills, you can assemble your panels in just a couple of days (I recommend freeing up a weekend to give yourself ample time).

It's a great project to get your children in on, provides them with an alternative to playing computer games all day, gives them a lesson in environmental issues and energy conservation. You won't believe the buzz they will get when they realize the solar panel they built is powering a laptop etc.

Not only will you stand to save a lot of cash by building your own cheap solar panels as opposed to purchasing them pre built, you will also cut (depending on the number of panels you build and your homes energy needs) anywhere up to 80% (in some cases above this) off your traditional power usage, this can translate to hundreds of dollars saved on every power bill.

So whether you are looking to help reduce your carbon footprint or simply want to save a few dollars, take a look at the following link for side by side reviews of the leading Solar Power Kits and build your own solar panels today.

by Tariq Ajram

When driving through a neighborhood, have you ever seen any houses with a large number of tall tinted windows? There is a good explanation, because of such windows, the people living in those homes are saving a good deal of money on their energy bills each month. How is this?-you ask. More simple than you might think. These homeowners have invested in home solar panel kits. With very little work your home could be built to make homemade energy using solar power. This would in turn save your family money by eliminating your monthly electric bill.

When you are ready to build your solar powered home, you might consider some of these ideas. It is common in most parts of the country for the sun to shine southward towards your home. The best location for most of your windows would therefore be on the south side of your home. By strategically placing your windows, you are letting the sun flow naturally through your home making it easier to heat with solar energy. You should also consider how many trees are close to this side of the house, because they can block the suns rays making it more difficult for the solar panels to absorb the sun light for the solar energy. When decorating your home you might also consider decorating with lighter colors which help distribute the heat from the sun more evenly than darker colors do.

Home solar panel kits work by collecting heat from the sun and transforming it into energy for your home. This renewable energy works to power your home as well as heat your water. The initial cost for building a solar powered home is a little more than a conventional home, but the savings far outweigh that initial expense. Homemade solar power really is the smarter choice when you consider the outrageous rise in the cost of electric power over the last few years. Living off grid has not only become easier but solar panel kits and other solar products have become more affordable.

Effectively heating and cooling your home using solar power by following these simple steps:

1.) By using ceiling fans, you reduce the amount of time you run your air conditioner.

2.) Ceiling fans also distribute the amount of heat and air more evenly so you do not have hot and cold pockets throughout your home.

3.) The use of metal insulated doors will help retain the heat and also keep out the cold.

4.) When the sun is shining the most on a particular side of your home, you can keep those doors closed to help retain the heat inside your home.

The many advantages of building a solar powered home also include the peace of mind that you are building an environmentally friendly home and preserving our natural resources. Another great benefit is being free from the burden of a monthly energy bill, and the constant worry of rising gas and electricity prices. You are taking the first step in creating efficient homemade energy by acquiring a home solar panel kit and building your new solar home.

The largest sources of energy that we are currently using will eventually run dry. As we run out of non-renewable sources of energy, they are also getting more expensive. Renewable sources of energy are the way of the future but many people still don't believe that it is cost-effective for their own homes.

Costly and Complex? Not anymore!

If you pay somebody to install your solar panels for you, it may cost more than $3000 easily. But surprisingly, if you have a good manual for it its not actually a complicated task.

There are many guides on the Internet that show you how to do just that, and you can build solar panels starting at surprisingly low prices to save 80% on your electric bill or more.

Many of these manuals are easy enough that anybody with basic knowledge of tools and access to a hardware store can do it. Alternative energy is low-maintenance and low-cost, and the price is dropping every day due to better technology.

Government Grants

Make sure that any guide you get shows you this secret, for sure.

You can also get government grants to install solar panels - these guides can show you how to get $1000's back from the government by installing your own alternative energy sources. Free money for clean energy!

Power Companies Will Also Give You Money

If you conserve energy and send more to the grid than you use, your energy meter will go backwards and your power company will send you a check for the power you give them. By doing this you're not only making money but reducing the use of traditional sources of energy such as coal.

Save the Environment But Don't Pay The Price

You can either do something about our failing environment or you can just go and watch more TV about it like everybody else...

Now that you can actually profit from going green, you have no excuse!

How to get started?

Why solar panels? With the ever-present threat of Global Warming looming over our heads, clean and renewable energy is an appealing alternative to electricity generated from fossil fuels. Solar energy can reduce the monthly cost of electricity. It is a technology amenable to DIY projects.

Solar panels harness the power of sunlight to generate electricity through the use of photovoltaic (PV) cells. If money is no object, a contractor can be hired to obtain and install a solar system for you. For those of us in the "other" category, there are other less expensive options. These include purchasing solar panel kits, refurbishing used solar panels, and the ultimate DIY of making panels from component parts. Solar panels can create a more self-sufficient household in which they meet your all or most of household electrical energy needs. The ideal scenario would have the electricity generated will exceed the needs permitting electricity to be sold back to the Grid.

Although the there are other component required for more complex systems, the basic elements of a homemade solar panel system include four items: Solar panel(s); Charge controller; Battery; and Inverter.

The solar panel: While we see the system as a solar panel, the total voltage is the sum of the voltage of all the photovoltaic cells in the system. To determine how many panels are needed we need to look at and average out the energy usage that appears on our bills.

The charge controller / regulator: The charge controller helps to maximize the life of the battery by the prevention of overcharging. It also follows the discharge status of the battery day and night.

Battery: The electricity not immediately used is stored by a battery or series of batteries. Deep-cycle or marine batteries are preferable to automobile batteries because they are capable of storing all or virtually all of the electricity generated by the solar panels, thus minimizing waste.

Inverter: Solar panels generate and store electricity as DC or Direct Current, whereas our appliances utilize AC or Alternating Current. The job of the inverter is to convert DC to AC to meet our household needs.

If a solar panel system is designed with the intent of generating enough electricity to "sell back" to the Grid, then the components will include the AC Breaker Panel, and the Kilowatt-per-Hour Indicator are required. The KW per Hour indicator, for example is necessary to track how much current is provided to and from the grid to determine the charge or credit that appears on your monthly electric bill.

We should also not forget the obvious energy saving tips including the shutting off of lights in unused rooms and the use of Energy-saver fluorescent bulbs.

To summarize, homemade solar panels can provide a great opportunity for a DIY project. They are also only one of several great energy conservation tips.
