Many people like the notion of having a pool in their backyard. If you do too, you should understand that it takes either a lot of work or a lot of money to install. Then there is the incessant maintenance of the pool and its water. If you are concerned that you will lose all of your garden, there is no need, because you can design your pool so that there is a fair bit of vegetation incorporated into it. In fact, there are many designs you can use when landscaping for a pool.

When landscaping for a pool, you need to have a design to work to. You can either have a tailor-made plan drawn up for your backyard, you could make your own plan or you could use one out of a magazine. There is no reason why you can not create your own design. The best way to begin would be to get some concepts from landscaping magazines or other household periodicals.

The best way of going about landscaping for a pool is to draw the precise size and shape of your backyard on a piece of graph paper to scale. Plot in any immovable objects such as downpipes, a shed or septic tank. If that constrains the size of your pool too much, you can have these objects moved if necessary. Nothing is impossible, but it does add to the cost. Once you have sufficient space, you are all set to start planning.

Copy and modify drawings from periodicals by all means, but if you feel that you are not up to it, have the drawing made for you. A local architect can do it, or phone the local technical college and ask one of the lecturers or students to do it for you. It is not as expensive as you might think. If you have the design done for you, make sure that you have thought about what you want and make sure that the drawer knows about it.

If you want lots of flowers, it is best to have raised flower beds. This will stop your flowers from spreading too far and will allow you more control. The flowers will have to be quite resilient and resistant to chemicals such as chlorine. The atmosphere will be more humid around the pool as well.

You will need some sheltered area for when it is very hot. Trees are a good idea, but they can take a very long time to grow. Palms look fantastic by a pool, but some species can take five years to grow high enough. You could check out the possibilities of planting semi-mature trees or look for faster-growing varieties. In the meanwhile, you could construct a grass-roofed lean-to or some umbrellas.

Lighting is also an important consideration. The pool should be floodlit at night to prevent people falling in it at night, but not only for that reason, it looks good as well. Accent lighting on the plants and trees really brings atmosphere to the pool and these lights can be solar powered so that you can move them around should you want to.

Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on quite a few topics, but is at present concerned with outdoor accent lighting.

If you would like to make any furniture for your house or if you want to start manufacturing your own wooden products for sale as a business, then you will require some wood working machines. There are innumerable items of machinery for wood working and I will list some of the most widespread of them hereunder.

Belt Sander: a belt sander removes the surface layers on timber and other materials very quickly, because the sandpaper is in a belt drive similar to a tank track and turns rapidly. Use coarse paper to get rid of paint and varnish, use finer papers to smooth wood off. They are electrically powered.

Circular Saw: the circular saw is a very powerful, hand-held power saw. There are different blades for different types of tasks. Some give a rough, but fast cut; others are for finer work. The circular saw can be electrically or petrol driven.

Power Drill: power drills for wood working jobs do not require a hammer capability, but if you are going to get a good power drill, you might as well get a hammer drill. The 'hammer' attribute of the drill is utilized for drilling into concrete, so it is handy for fixing gate posts etc.

Jig Saw: a jig saw can be hand held or bench fitted. The smaller, electric jig saw is ideal for cutting out irregular shapes, as the name implies. They do not cut swiftly so do not force them, but it is very important to use the correct blade. Although there is a 'universal' blade too, it is better to use the right blade for the task.

Router: the router puts an edge on a piece of timber. They can be fitted with diverse spinning, cutting bits to produce different types of beveled edges.

Nail Gun: nail guns use either electricity or explosive charges to fire nails into matter in one squeeze of a trigger. Nail guns can fire different sized nails to different depths with the appropriate strength of charge. They are outstanding for repetitive jobs like roofing, plaster boarding and framing.

Electric Screwdriver: there are all the different sized bits you would expect to fit the various kinds and sizes of screws. The electric screwdriver is also ideal for recurring tasks. Screws are fixed very quickly with next to no effort on behalf of the operator.

Electronic Wire Finder: these little devices are really helpful if you are working in a house you do not know. They will help you find buried wires and timbers. The former to avoid and the latter to put a nail or screw into. It is very useful for hanging pictures and shelves on dry-lined walls.

There are several other portable power tools used in wood working, but these are the most popular by far. Twenty years ago, the electric tools in this list would have been driven by mains electricity, but these days most of these tools are rechargeable. If you buy your tools from one manufacturer, you will almost certainly find that the batteries are transposable, which makes recharging a lot easier.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with a favourite subject, cabinet woodworking plans.

A shed is an outbuilding, usually, with a single story, which is used for shelter or storehouse. Some people start to make a shed with full of enthusiasm; however, soon they will drop it out as they might not have good planning and experience. Building a shed is not hard at all; you simply need to know about your accomplishments well before hurrying into the actual building. When you want to construct a shed, you must keep many things in mind before you start building it.

First, you should ascertain a shed design, and then you must have a plan to fulfill it by studying the positioning of the shed and the materials to be used. We have done all this research for you. You can fabricate a shed using scratch; however, use shed kits instead of building a shed from scratch to get best result.

You can instantly download shed plans just for about $5 to $30. Building from scratch, instead of purchasing a shed kit, you can make a shed cheaper and working with the plans affords you more freedom. Of course, the projects comprise precise directions and measurements; however, if you are well versed, you can easily make betterments and customizations to them before you start cutting. You can even choose the material you prefer the most. Nonetheless, building a shed yourself utilizing only a shed plan is harder.

To do things yourself, you must have experience and good skills. By utilizing this method, you may consume many days, sometimes more than a week, to form a shed. Moreover, there are many chances to do the things unconventional and waste the materials. Sometimes, plan with complex measurements, you may consume all the materials!

Building a shed using a shed kit is elementary. Using a good shed kit, you can build an averagely complicated shed in a day or two. This method never fails. A shed kid will furnish you all the parts cut out and chopped; simply, you cannot fail. Even So, you can likely to misplace some parts but it is simple to realise the mistake and settle it.

The other advantage is that these shed kits are obtainable universally. Since each of these kits has been exhaustively verified, sold, successfully made, fixed, and proven to be successful many times, you will never fail to build a shed using these kits. Most of the manufacturers and stores are providing complete details about the shed kits on-line.

Thence, it would be very easy to you to do total research online for the model of the kit you plan to buy and you can check opinions of the workforce required to build your sheds if you are seeking for it. Most of the shed kits are very expensive. Sometimes, the more intricate and good quality kits cost many thousand dollars for a single shed. Normally, the delivery of the shed kid may squander many days. If you buy them online, you must pay for transportation and wait further. Even though there are some minor disadvantages, a shed kit will always provide you more convienence and a marvelous look.

Do you want to save money by not paying the labor on any woodworking project at your home? Or do you want to do the project on your own rather than getting it done by your husband?

Do you want to save money by not paying the labor on any woodworking project at your home? Or do you want to do the project on your own rather than getting it done by your husband?

Here is the time to do it. Carve excellent chairs, tables, chest boxes, flames, cabinets and other wood items on your own and impress your husband as well as save some money. Also, use the waste wood pieces smartly to create something new and unique.

For this, you need some tools, which can provide you with accurate dimensions of your woodworking projects.

Here are some tips to do it:

Acquire knowledge about the tools

There are hundreds of measurement tools available in the market, which can be used for woodwork measuring. However, you have to find a tool, which is perfect for you measuring purposes. For this, read the manuals and guidelines and gain some knowledge about different tools.

Analyze the type of wood being used

You should recognize the kind of wood, which will be used in the woodworking project. Doing this will help you to gauge its color, texture and depth. You will find some special characteristics in every type of wood, which distinguishes it from other kinds. Hence, make sure that you consider the wood while making the furniture.

There are some kinds of wood, which are flexible and can bend. However, some are hard. The strength of the wood is depicted from very soft to very hard.

After identifying the kind of wood being used, the next job will be to find the right tool, which can get precise dimensions for the woodworking project. Remember that some kinds of wood expand before being used in the project. Hence, you should look out for some special tools, which are specifically designed to solve this problem.

Evaluate the measurement

You can evaluate the perfect measurement of the project by making a sketch of the item you intend to make. This will allow you to create margins for changes, wherever required. Doing this will also restrict you from buying unnecessary things and cutting the wrong sizes.

In addition to these, you will come across many other tips, which can help you to measure the woodwork easily. Just be creative and follow the right measurement tips!

A tape measure is an essential measuring tool that any person thinking of starting working with wood should consider. One great recommended tool is the Fatmax tape measure.

Any woodworker would know that he is only as good as his tools. It is important therefore to keep them in pristine and in good condition.

by Ryan Henders

Any woodworker would know that he is only as good as his tools. It is important therefore to keep them in pristine and in good condition.

Keeping the woodworking tools sharp does not only make for precision work it reduces the possibility of accidents as well. This means that you are going to have to invest in some tools just to do the job of keeping the others sharpened. The problem is how do you know which ones to buy for what tool. What you are going to need will also be determined as to the type of woodworking you do. Each specialized area has its own tool requirements. For example, if you do woodcarving or construct wood furniture then your needs will be different.

There are some tools that you can hand sharpen but there are others that will require power sharpeners. You will need to learn about each one of your tools then determine what will be needed to sharpen them.

One thing you are going to learn is that power equipment designed for sharpening tools do not necessarily do a better job they are just able to do the same job much faster. For tools that have been neglected the power sharpening tools work great at removing any build up debris on the cutting components. Most often, these cutting edges are gouged and this really is where you will need the power sharpening equipment to do an effective job.

One of the most popular pieces of equipment for sharpening is the grinders. It must be noted that the shop grinders are not for using on woodworking tools in their original state. They need some modifications done to them first. You will need to remove the original wheel that comes on the shop grinder and replace it with one of the wheels that is designed specifically for sharpening wood working tools. The original blade that came on your grinder is designed for sharpening items such as the blades of your lawnmower or for grinding in general.

Another part that also needs to be changed is the tool rest. You will find the tool rest that comes on the grinder difficult to adjust because it?s so small. This makes it most difficult for any type of control of your grinding. Doing your grinding up grades won?t be difficult to do because they are readily available on the market.

Once you have purchased your grinder and completed the necessary changes to it then you will be ready to start getting your woodworking tools back in shape where they can do a great job just like they were designed to do. Often novices to woodworking tools will blame the inferior job they are doing on the quality of the tool not realizing it?s because of a dull blade. Then there are some that will attempt to just change the blade instead of sharpening the one they have.

When it comes time to finish your project you need to know that for wood treatments it is either stain, paints or finish. They are each providing a different outcome. To tint the wood you would use wood stains. Paints sit on the wood and protect it. Some finishes are pretty much paint without any color added to it. They are the ones that give that clear protection.

Probably one of the most well known finishes is varnish. It?s a great finish because the more layers you use the stronger the finish. The major problem with varnish is it dries slowly which increases the chance for dust to get into the finish. If possible, try to do your finishing work in an area where there is the least amount of dust.

A mixture of resins and synthetics boiled together is what makes varnish. If you are using polyurethane?s then you are simply using a varnish that has had a polyurethane resin added to it. When you are using a varnish that contains a higher quantity of oil, it makes the product more flexible and this is known as Spar varnish, which makes it perfect for outdoor use because of it flexing properties.

If you are going to use varnish as your finishing product then you need to know how to apply it properly. Working in a dust free room is a priority. Then using a tack cloth wipe down your project as it must be perfectly clean. Put some of your varnish into a container that you can work out of .That way if it becomes contaminated with dust you can just discard that amount. Apply the varnish using long steady strokes with a brush working in the grain direction. Tip off your brush strokes. Wed sand in between coats with fine sandpaper.

There is also wiping varnish but read the labels carefully before using this product to be sure that it is varnish and not tung oil.

Then there are oil and varnish blends. They work similar to an oil finish but have a bit more protection to them but they are not for building layers.

Shellac is a natural resin but not is as durable as the others are. It?s not good for items such as kitchen counter or cabinets for example. It is a fast drying product though and you can get it in various colors.

Lacquer is usually applied with a spray gun but the fumes can be dangerous and the dry dust is explosive.

There are some really good what are labeled as water based finishes but they all have a certain amount of solvent in them. Their two weaknesses is they show brush marks and they bubble when you are applying them so use a synthetic brush for this.

Proper sanding between coats of your finish is one of your most important steps. Be sure to use fine sandpaper. The sanding removes bumps and uneven spots. Especially made sandpaper for wet sanding is ideal. Really, take the time to research the various finishes you are going to use to get the best application and intended use from them.

Do you really know which woodworking tools and equipment is essential for your skills? Not only do you have to decide on what tools to buy but also how much you want to budget for them as well as their quality.

Some tool shoppers feel they just have to buy the highest quality tool on the market while feel they really want to keep it low budget. If you are a weekend woodworker than the low budget, tools should work just fine for you. If you are a seasoned woodworker starting to set up your own shop and know you are, going to be at it consistently then you may want the higher priced tools which means better quality.

Number one on your list should be a drill and a corded one is less expensive. Be sure it has a screwdriver attachment. Next, you want to get a circular saw for your trimming and basic cuts? Then you will need a sander. Preferably a finishing sander. It?s perfect for rounding off some of your pieces and it gives a nice finish to your projects. It only uses a ? of a piece of sandpaper, which is quite economical

A jigsaw is another valuable tool. It?s used for your rough outline work and for cutting curves. It?s not a tool that you will want to be without. Then a table saw should be on your ?must buy? list as well. When you go to buy this one spend a bit more money and get a good quality one. You will be using this tool on a regular basis. You need one that is going to have a powerful motor. The lesser quality ones with the smaller motors tend to stall out.

The same principal should apply for your router so make sure you buy a good one. You want to be sure you are going to get precision work. The router has multiple uses like cutting the profiles into the wood and is also used to cut molding and special cuts as well. You will need to determine if you want to buy a plunged or fixed version. The plunged are a bit more expensive. You have to set how deep your cut is going to be before turning on the router if you are using a fixed router.

Then you eventually are going to need a band saw and a compound miter saw. You will need a lathe but it?s the quality of your turning tools that will be important here. If you like to finish your projects quickly then purchase a biscuit joiner.

Finally, you are going to want a belt sander as well as a drill press.

Once you have purchased all of the wonderful tools there aren?t going to be too many projects that you can?t handle. You will now have a very well equipped workroom to give you many hours of enjoyment and quality workmanship.

It is a rewarding feeling to restore an old house to a pristine condition. One of the most difficult tasks is refinishing your cabinets.

by Ryan Henders

It is a rewarding feeling to restore an old house to a pristine condition. One of the most difficult tasks is refinishing your cabinets.

To do the job right its means you have to strip all the old product such as paint and finish off. Then you have to bleach the wood to remove either the stains that were left from the old finish or having something spilt or set on them. Then there is sanding and scraping to tend to. Finally, there is the new stain and them the finish to be done. After all,\ of this you can sit back and admire you long and enduring hard work.

Most jobs of this magnitude don?t usually go all that trouble free. You will run into at least a few minor snags, but the majority of them can be dealt with. It?s important that you know the wood that your cabinets are made from. If it?s an older house don?t be surprised to find out that there are several varieties that were used. In this case, you will never get one light stain to come out the same on all the pieces. You can however go to a deeper stain and get results that are more satisfactory.

You really may want to consider buying new doors and drawers and just keeping the original framework. When you are working with the many chemicals it would take to strip your cupboards most often, it can be too harsh on older wood. Another issue is getting the old finish totally stripped at hard to get at pieces can sometimes be impossible. Then once you even get to the point where the old cupboards are prepared for the new stain and finishes you have to take into account the several coatings you are going to have to apply and the drying time that is going to be involved. The kitchen is one of the most difficult rooms to work in because of the food preparation, grease and steam that is almost always present there.

Before you say no to the idea of buying new doors and drawers at least check out your home improvement store and see what they have to offer. At least this way you are covering all of the possible options and making an informed opinion.

If you have decided to go ahead with the original, you may want to consider at least buying new hardware. In the older cupboards quite often the door handles didn?t have a lot of character and the knobs were likely ceramic that has become cracked and chipped.

You are going to have to make decisions on what type of refinish you are going to do. This is best done after all the preparation work is done so you can see what condition the cabinets are in. This will determine if you are going to have to go with a darker stain.

by William Boyle

Spring rolls around and its time to dip into the pocket book and start getting ready for the summer. There's planting to be done, and repairs to do. Perhaps there's a landscaping project on the horizon.

Once the plans are in place and the items are bought its time to get out the tools. Now this is where the real challenge begins. Where did you put them last fall? Probably find some in the basement and then there's that corner of the garage that has some of the bigger ones. Oh yes don't forget about the spare room probably tucked some away in there too.

This has all got to tell you something. As if you really need, a garden shed. It's going to save you time and money in the long run. It's going to save you time because all of your outdoor tools and equipment can be stored in one place. That means when you are in need of something you can just go and get it because you know where it is. When your garden and outdoor implements are scattered all over the place, it takes a lot of time just remembering where they are and then the search is on.

Money wise they save you a great deal. One of your agreements against the garden shed investment may be you just don't want to put out that kind of money after all you've managed so far.

The longer you live in a house the more you accumulate. You may have managed up until now but the time is coming sooner or later you just won't have enough storage space.

Yes, it's going to cost you money to buy your garden shed. Think of it this way though how much has you spent on soil weeding products and fertilizer. You use a portion of them then one of two things happen. You let them sit outside where they get destroyed by the elements, or secondly you end up throwing them out because there is no place to put them.

Most of the lawn and garden equipment that you have probably purchased has not been cheap either. When it's not stored properly, it can become damaged or even ruined. The other thing to consider is some of the equipment is not safe to be laying around especially where there are young children.

Finally, a garden shed really does add to the ambience of the landscaping. It makes it look neat and just shows that someone really cares about their outdoors. If you aren't sure, what style to get just look around your neighborhood and you will get a good idea. You need to base your choice according to your needs. If you don't own a lot of garden supplies and equipment then one of the smaller ones will work nicely. Don't forget though that those winter items can be conveniently stored here as well so plan your required space accordingly. Once you have got past the fact that you had to lay some money out for your shed you are going to be most glad that you did.

There are saws with removable blades, the handle being slotted, having a special bolt and nut which can be tightened to keep the removable blade in position.

by Jeremiah Wright

There are saws with removable blades, the handle being slotted, having a special bolt and nut which can be tightened to keep the removable blade in position.

On the other hand, it is useful to have a short clasping budding knife in addition. The budding knife is not only used for the actual operation of budding, but can be used for summer pruning, pruning the laterals of vines, and for removing the unwanted shoots of peaches, in the summer. The budding knife usually has a white bone handle, it is about 4-1 inches long when closed, and is about 61 inches long when opened. The blade will be short, sharp-pointed and strong, and the make I prefer is known The Saynor. The handle purposely tapers towards the end, so that it can be used for opening up the cuts made in the bark of the wood at budding time.

In these modern days of 'do it yourself' and 'time and motion study' many gardeners prefer to use secateurs for pruning. There are two good types: the Rolcut and the Wilkinson's Sword. Both of these do very little damage indeed to the bark when the cut is made, and the blades can be kept sharp with the whetstone.

Because the maiden tree has been cut back-often expressed by the gardener, 'headed back'-in this way, three good growths should develop, these forming the basis of future branches.

When there are more than three shoots the weakest of them can be cut back to within one bud of its base, in the winter, while the three strongest, which should be well distributed around the top of the tree, are cut back by about half to just above an outward-pointing bud. It is important to try and leave the head of the tree level when doing this.

The pruner hooks the end of the apparatus over the end of the branch or shoot and then, by pulling down the handle, the blade passes through the wood and cuts it off at the desired place. It takes a certain amount of skill and experience to ensure that the cuts are made in exactly the right place.
