Keeping Traditions by Utilizing Handcrafted Rustic Outdoor Lighting

Keeping Traditions by Utilizing Handcrafted Rustic Outdoor Lighting

Many craftspeople today use rustic designs from the classic originals.

Some antique stores and resale shops are intended for customers who require authentic rustic outdoor lighting designs.

Some original designs are chosen from buildings rich in history, many of which have been restored as well as a variety of museums.

The new popular types of exterior lighting include chandeliers, lanterns, sconces for walls and floor and table lamps.

These reproductions are handcrafted and usually fabricated utilizing the same materials that our forebears used.

Rustic, handcrafted lighting fixtures have been updated from the old standard but are still founded on the original design and are made from metals such as bronze, pewter, copper and brass.

Hardwoods such as American cedar and maple are used to re-create originals in terms of patterns and style. In order to reproduce effectively the foliated and soft look of the original Rustic lighting fixtures, the wood will frequently be lightly antiqued, painted, or else stained.

Some manufacturers continue the old custom of handcrafting their products for outdoor lighting fixtures while offering a choice of electrical or gas fitting or even candles.

Every pioneer outdoor light is handcrafted by a craftsman whose main goal is to remain true to rustic, recurring themes.

Whilst traditional models of chandeliers use wax candles for providing light, modern fixtures can contain either electrical sockets for electric bulbs or electric candles.

Some more contemporary versions of rustic chandeliers include motifs such as leaves, frets, swags, pine cones, and patriotic symbols.

The authenticity of rustic lanterns is usually kept by suspending them from metal chains on top of wooden posts which are attached to walls by hardwood or metal accessories.

Dozens of animal themes, featuring different kinds of fish, moose, buffalo and bears, were featured in the decorative artwork of past decades.

Those who emphasize the beauty of handcrafted, high-quality, rustic outdoor lights often hand beat the metal features or else hand carve the min order to maintain the colonial models' integrity.

Another very popular theme used in exterior lighting systems is Antlers. In handcrafting pieces of art such as rustic chandeliers, artisans more often than not utilize replicated antlers, although some do make use of natural ones.

You can't beat the warm glow of true rustic lighting outside - nothing looks more like yesteryear than rustic outdoor lighting that has been hand-crafted for your home.

by Ryan Henders

Any woodworker would know that he is only as good as his tools. It is important therefore to keep them in pristine and in good condition.

Keeping the woodworking tools sharp does not only make for precision work it reduces the possibility of accidents as well. This means that you are going to have to invest in some tools just to do the job of keeping the others sharpened. The problem is how do you know which ones to buy for what tool. What you are going to need will also be determined as to the type of woodworking you do. Each specialized area has its own tool requirements. For example, if you do woodcarving or construct wood furniture then your needs will be different.

There are some tools that you can hand sharpen but there are others that will require power sharpeners. You will need to learn about each one of your tools then determine what will be needed to sharpen them.

One thing you are going to learn is that power equipment designed for sharpening tools do not necessarily do a better job they are just able to do the same job much faster. For tools that have been neglected the power sharpening tools work great at removing any build up debris on the cutting components. Most often, these cutting edges are gouged and this really is where you will need the power sharpening equipment to do an effective job.

One of the most popular pieces of equipment for sharpening is the grinders. It must be noted that the shop grinders are not for using on woodworking tools in their original state. They need some modifications done to them first. You will need to remove the original wheel that comes on the shop grinder and replace it with one of the wheels that is designed specifically for sharpening wood working tools. The original blade that came on your grinder is designed for sharpening items such as the blades of your lawnmower or for grinding in general.

Another part that also needs to be changed is the tool rest. You will find the tool rest that comes on the grinder difficult to adjust because it?s so small. This makes it most difficult for any type of control of your grinding. Doing your grinding up grades won?t be difficult to do because they are readily available on the market.

Once you have purchased your grinder and completed the necessary changes to it then you will be ready to start getting your woodworking tools back in shape where they can do a great job just like they were designed to do. Often novices to woodworking tools will blame the inferior job they are doing on the quality of the tool not realizing it?s because of a dull blade. Then there are some that will attempt to just change the blade instead of sharpening the one they have.

When it comes time to finish your project you need to know that for wood treatments it is either stain, paints or finish. They are each providing a different outcome. To tint the wood you would use wood stains. Paints sit on the wood and protect it. Some finishes are pretty much paint without any color added to it. They are the ones that give that clear protection.

Probably one of the most well known finishes is varnish. It?s a great finish because the more layers you use the stronger the finish. The major problem with varnish is it dries slowly which increases the chance for dust to get into the finish. If possible, try to do your finishing work in an area where there is the least amount of dust.

A mixture of resins and synthetics boiled together is what makes varnish. If you are using polyurethane?s then you are simply using a varnish that has had a polyurethane resin added to it. When you are using a varnish that contains a higher quantity of oil, it makes the product more flexible and this is known as Spar varnish, which makes it perfect for outdoor use because of it flexing properties.

If you are going to use varnish as your finishing product then you need to know how to apply it properly. Working in a dust free room is a priority. Then using a tack cloth wipe down your project as it must be perfectly clean. Put some of your varnish into a container that you can work out of .That way if it becomes contaminated with dust you can just discard that amount. Apply the varnish using long steady strokes with a brush working in the grain direction. Tip off your brush strokes. Wed sand in between coats with fine sandpaper.

There is also wiping varnish but read the labels carefully before using this product to be sure that it is varnish and not tung oil.

Then there are oil and varnish blends. They work similar to an oil finish but have a bit more protection to them but they are not for building layers.

Shellac is a natural resin but not is as durable as the others are. It?s not good for items such as kitchen counter or cabinets for example. It is a fast drying product though and you can get it in various colors.

Lacquer is usually applied with a spray gun but the fumes can be dangerous and the dry dust is explosive.

There are some really good what are labeled as water based finishes but they all have a certain amount of solvent in them. Their two weaknesses is they show brush marks and they bubble when you are applying them so use a synthetic brush for this.

Proper sanding between coats of your finish is one of your most important steps. Be sure to use fine sandpaper. The sanding removes bumps and uneven spots. Especially made sandpaper for wet sanding is ideal. Really, take the time to research the various finishes you are going to use to get the best application and intended use from them.

Do you really know which woodworking tools and equipment is essential for your skills? Not only do you have to decide on what tools to buy but also how much you want to budget for them as well as their quality.

by Ryan Henders

Do you really know which woodworking tools and equipment is essential for your skills? Not only do you have to decide on what tools to buy but also how much you want to budget for them as well as their quality.

Some tool shoppers feel they just have to buy the highest quality tool on the market while feel they really want to keep it low budget. If you are a weekend woodworker than the low budget, tools should work just fine for you. If you are a seasoned woodworker starting to set up your own shop and know you are, going to be at it consistently then you may want the higher priced tools which means better quality.

Number one on your list should be a drill and a corded one is less expensive. Be sure it has a screwdriver attachment. Next, you want to get a circular saw for your trimming and basic cuts? Then you will need a sander. Preferably a finishing sander. It?s perfect for rounding off some of your pieces and it gives a nice finish to your projects. It only uses a ? of a piece of sandpaper, which is quite economical

A jigsaw is another valuable tool. It?s used for your rough outline work and for cutting curves. It?s not a tool that you will want to be without. Then a table saw should be on your ?must buy? list as well. When you go to buy this one spend a bit more money and get a good quality one. You will be using this tool on a regular basis. You need one that is going to have a powerful motor. The lesser quality ones with the smaller motors tend to stall out.

The same principal should apply for your router so make sure you buy a good one. You want to be sure you are going to get precision work. The router has multiple uses like cutting the profiles into the wood and is also used to cut molding and special cuts as well. You will need to determine if you want to buy a plunged or fixed version. The plunged are a bit more expensive. You have to set how deep your cut is going to be before turning on the router if you are using a fixed router.

Then you eventually are going to need a band saw and a compound miter saw. You will need a lathe but it?s the quality of your turning tools that will be important here. If you like to finish your projects quickly then purchase a biscuit joiner.

Finally, you are going to want a belt sander as well as a drill press.

Once you have purchased all of the wonderful tools there aren?t going to be too many projects that you can?t handle. You will now have a very well equipped workroom to give you many hours of enjoyment and quality workmanship.

It is a rewarding feeling to restore an old house to a pristine condition. One of the most difficult tasks is refinishing your cabinets.

by Ryan Henders

It is a rewarding feeling to restore an old house to a pristine condition. One of the most difficult tasks is refinishing your cabinets.

To do the job right its means you have to strip all the old product such as paint and finish off. Then you have to bleach the wood to remove either the stains that were left from the old finish or having something spilt or set on them. Then there is sanding and scraping to tend to. Finally, there is the new stain and them the finish to be done. After all,\ of this you can sit back and admire you long and enduring hard work.

Most jobs of this magnitude don?t usually go all that trouble free. You will run into at least a few minor snags, but the majority of them can be dealt with. It?s important that you know the wood that your cabinets are made from. If it?s an older house don?t be surprised to find out that there are several varieties that were used. In this case, you will never get one light stain to come out the same on all the pieces. You can however go to a deeper stain and get results that are more satisfactory.

You really may want to consider buying new doors and drawers and just keeping the original framework. When you are working with the many chemicals it would take to strip your cupboards most often, it can be too harsh on older wood. Another issue is getting the old finish totally stripped at hard to get at pieces can sometimes be impossible. Then once you even get to the point where the old cupboards are prepared for the new stain and finishes you have to take into account the several coatings you are going to have to apply and the drying time that is going to be involved. The kitchen is one of the most difficult rooms to work in because of the food preparation, grease and steam that is almost always present there.

Before you say no to the idea of buying new doors and drawers at least check out your home improvement store and see what they have to offer. At least this way you are covering all of the possible options and making an informed opinion.

If you have decided to go ahead with the original, you may want to consider at least buying new hardware. In the older cupboards quite often the door handles didn?t have a lot of character and the knobs were likely ceramic that has become cracked and chipped.

You are going to have to make decisions on what type of refinish you are going to do. This is best done after all the preparation work is done so you can see what condition the cabinets are in. This will determine if you are going to have to go with a darker stain.

by William Boyle

Spring rolls around and its time to dip into the pocket book and start getting ready for the summer. There's planting to be done, and repairs to do. Perhaps there's a landscaping project on the horizon.

Once the plans are in place and the items are bought its time to get out the tools. Now this is where the real challenge begins. Where did you put them last fall? Probably find some in the basement and then there's that corner of the garage that has some of the bigger ones. Oh yes don't forget about the spare room probably tucked some away in there too.

This has all got to tell you something. As if you really need, a garden shed. It's going to save you time and money in the long run. It's going to save you time because all of your outdoor tools and equipment can be stored in one place. That means when you are in need of something you can just go and get it because you know where it is. When your garden and outdoor implements are scattered all over the place, it takes a lot of time just remembering where they are and then the search is on.

Money wise they save you a great deal. One of your agreements against the garden shed investment may be you just don't want to put out that kind of money after all you've managed so far.

The longer you live in a house the more you accumulate. You may have managed up until now but the time is coming sooner or later you just won't have enough storage space.

Yes, it's going to cost you money to buy your garden shed. Think of it this way though how much has you spent on soil weeding products and fertilizer. You use a portion of them then one of two things happen. You let them sit outside where they get destroyed by the elements, or secondly you end up throwing them out because there is no place to put them.

Most of the lawn and garden equipment that you have probably purchased has not been cheap either. When it's not stored properly, it can become damaged or even ruined. The other thing to consider is some of the equipment is not safe to be laying around especially where there are young children.

Finally, a garden shed really does add to the ambience of the landscaping. It makes it look neat and just shows that someone really cares about their outdoors. If you aren't sure, what style to get just look around your neighborhood and you will get a good idea. You need to base your choice according to your needs. If you don't own a lot of garden supplies and equipment then one of the smaller ones will work nicely. Don't forget though that those winter items can be conveniently stored here as well so plan your required space accordingly. Once you have got past the fact that you had to lay some money out for your shed you are going to be most glad that you did.

If you speak to woodworkers they each have their personal opinions on what is the correct way to do things. Like everything else, you can ask one question and get some distinct answers. One of the main questions a new craftman will ask is ,which is better: following plans or working from scratch? Here are some of the arguments raised for both parts of this enquiry.

To second the debate that is always easier to use woodworking plans and pattern designs, here are the elements this is likely based on.

- For the beginner it is really the only way. The patterns hold everything they want to know to get started.

- Beginners have a challenging time imaging how they want the complete project to look.

They have a sound idea of what they desire ,but they arent able to design it out without some help.

- Plans save a lot time due to the fact that there is not as much time drained on revising the project. Its all there in the plan, you just follow the step by step directions.

-They can be cost savers. One, by the way they outline exactly what materials you are going to want. Then you dont waste money on purchasing materials you dont need. Secondly you will trim waste as youre not as likely to mess up on your cuts and things like that.

That handles the supporting arguments for why woodworking plans are better, now lets look at the arguments of why working from scratch is advisable instead.

- Often if you have a special item in mind that you would love to make, then you may not be able to obtain the project for it. Often when individuals are constructing something they want it to be unique. You wont get that when you are using plans.

- Just because its a woodwork plan, doesnt mean that it will be understandable or easy to follow. Sometimes the plans can get quite intricate. Also you may not be familiar with some of the language that is written in the design.

- What country the projects were designed in could be an issue as well. For instance measures and material could be contrasting.

- If you are an experienced woodworker or you are past the point of being a beginner then you will see that the plans will start to get boring. You may also begin to lose focus in the project is it is too elementary for you.

- One of the worst matters that can occur is they may not be right. For the beginner this could be demoralizing. Mostly as you wont have the experience maybe to prevent the mistake before you make it, or be able to correct it once you have.

- You are able to grow planning skills if you make your own woodworking plans. In the beginning there will be a bit of trial and error. Once you have achieved this stage you are not likely to be a beginner so you will have a good idea as to what your own plan calls for.

- In Conclusion, maybe the most central factor is that your own design is more personalised. Once its finished you will have the gratification of recognizing it is totally your work from beginning to end. Furthermore, it is one of a kind, and it is not found anyplace else in the world!

So you want a storage shed to keep your outdoor items properly fortified. You have browsed around to see whats useable, but you simply cant find one that fit your wants. Well, thats no trouble. You can build one yourself ,even if you're not a carpenter. All that is compulsory is ,for you to observe some quick and simple step by step plans, and you will have it built in no time.

Part One
Is to specify where you want to build it. You want to have a designated region planned out before you start. What space you have ready will specify the upper limit size you can build it.

Part two
Once you acknowledge your precise size its a respectable idea to rough sketch what you need. There are numerous home improvement stores that you can take your sketch to. They will draught up your storage shed plan for you, corresponding to the specs you supply them with. They will also furnish you with a list of materials that you will need. So now you have your plans. In addition they will render you with a guide on how to execute each step.

Step Three
Buy the items you will need as well-defined in your plan. its a great idea to have everything at hand so you dont have to keep running to you local store for supply materials once you commence construction.

Step Four
You are now ready to begin. Level your ground and prepare to set the grounding. You would have already determined if you are going to have a foundation as a wood plank floor or concrete slab type.

Step Five
The sides wall comes next. Place your items away that you are going to use for this. It is better to build the walls on the ground then lift them into position once they are together. Just conform to your guide for the how to instructions.

Step Six
Now its time to start work the roof. Start constructing by building your trusses. So construct one and then use it as a template for the rest. Remember to always refer back to your guide on how to shape the trusses.

Step Seven
Your storage shed should now be taking on some form. Its time to build the end walls. How you do this will count on what you have took in your plans. Be sure to stay with your original plans.

Part Eight
Now you are getting down to the last few steps. The trim is just as significant as the rest of your construction. Its what gives it that complete look so dont try to cut on costs here.

Step Nine
Your last 2 steps are applying the shingles for the roof before treating the wood. This is a very important step so listen up: The wood must have some kind of protective coating on it to protect it from the elements and decomposition. This can be varnish, stains or paints whatever is your preference.

Step Ten
You're finally done! All thats left is to sit back and admire your completed storage shed. If you hadnt built it yourself you might actually think it was a ready made shed bought from the store.

Often individuals will dive into a hobby before they even recognize if its for them. So to start with, the 1st consideration you want to know before taking on a woodworking project is, that its going to suit your interests. But the fact is that,, you won't know if you'll love it before you have even tried it, and thats a fair argument.

Decide first of all that you are going to start with something modest. Possibly a birdhouse or a planter or even a easy ornamental shelf. Nothing too fanciful though. It may even be a great idea to commence with a kit. This way you wont have to invest in a lot of tools while you are in this testing level. Once you have completed your test project and observed that you truly did love it, then you are ready to move onto bigger and better things, slowly though.

Now is the time to really start reading about what working with wood is all about. Its time to cultivate yourself and do some research. You want to accomplish at least the basic principles if you want to move forward. Plan on investing in some magazines and books. Try to buy magazines geared towards beginners at first, and observe for the ones that offer free designs in them as well.

The next item on your list for things to know is, what tools are you going to want. Dont run out and purchase state of the art, or top of the line tools. These are not essential. If you have been studying your magazines, then by now you should have a good idea what you are going to require. They no doubt gave you some effective pointers on how to pick out your tools. Every carpentry project will have some tool essentials, but most of these projects will usually comply to the regular wood working tools.

Before you even begin to think about starting a challenging woodworking project, study any info that came with your tools. It is imperative that first and foremost you become intimate and adhere to all of the safety rules and guidelines. Some very serious accidents can take place with the types of tools you will be using.

Now you are ready to start your project. Be sure that you have bought a pattern, and preferably a simple one. If you jump into something too complex it could get pricy, and you could become disheartened at it not turning out precisely as good as what it could be.

Woodworking projects require the same practice as anything else that you have became skilled in. You will gradually get better the more you do. Try and take some time to maybe take a few classes. Check out your local improvement stores and see if they offer workshops. Just make sure they are relevant to the kind of woodwork that you are doing.

If you follow these elementary guidelines, and keep reading and exploring, before you know it you will be able to class yourself as a seasoned woods craftsperson.

If you are just new to woodwork then do your preparation first, and find out all the safety safeguards you should be mindful of before you start. Dont compromise the time and say it just takes common sense. We all make faults, and not being aware or selecting the time to study about safety in your work could be a very pricy one. The perils are twofold in that you can put your personal safety at risk, or at they very least make some irreparable faults to your project.

Dont underrate the damage that some of the small woodworking tools can do. If the tool is sharp in any way ,it can cause a tricky cut or puncture. If its a huge tool like a saw it can cause you to lose a limb. To forbid this you must always be aware. If you are overfatigued, not feeling well ,or have been drinking alcohol then dont work on your project ,and most significantly do not use your tools.

Teach youself about the instruments you will be using for your woodworking projects. Understand what they are efficient of. Be sure to constantly read the operating directions as well as the safety directions before you even attempt to operate it. If is a second hand item that you have purchased, then go on the internet to search it.

Frequently you might even reach the manufacturer and they will be prepared to send you the info. Sometimes individuals will take away the safety guards that are installed on the tools. This is a very suicidal practice. Those guards are there for your safety. Also keep your tools in good working order. Damaged tools can result in a fire by shorting out, or even causing electrical shock.

Make sure your work area is broad enough that you can work safely. Keep it clean. Leaving things widespread on the floor is a really easy way for you or someone else to trip. Make it a habit to unplug any of your electrical tools when untended, especially if others have admittance to your work shop. Children are fascinated by tools and may be curious to try them.

If you have very long hair, be sure to keep it tied back. It can easily get caught in one of your tools, or impede your vision when you are working with a power instrument. Additionally its a great idea to get rid of jewelry that could get caught in your tools. Protective clothing is critical as well, such as goggles, gloves and dust masks when working on any woodworking project. If you are working with loud tools, then possibly use earplugs.

Ventilation is very important. Not only for the dust, but for the exhausts that are sometimes made from the finishing productions.

Not focusing could lead to accidents, you could also end up getting the wrong cuts on your wood for example. Or using the wrong type of finish product. This is discouraging when you have been working so hard on a woodworking project ,or invested so much money into materials. Many mishaps can be avoided in woodworking projects if you stick to the rules as well as use common sense.
