If you would like to make some furniture for your house or if you want to start manufacturing your own wooden products for sale as a business, then you will require some wood working machines. There are countless items of machinery for wood working and I will list some of the most widespread of them hereunder.

Belt Sander: a belt sander removes the surface layers on timber and other materials very fast, because the sandpaper is in a belt drive similar to a tank track and revolves quickly. Use coarse paper to remove paint and varnish, use finer papers to smooth wood off. They are electrically powered.

Circular Saw: the circular saw is a very powerful, hand-held power saw. There are different blades for different types of tasks. Some give a rough, but fast cut; others are for finer work. The circular saw can be electrically or petrol driven.

Power Drill: power drills for wood working jobs do not require a hammer capability, but if you are going to get a good power drill, you might as well get a hammer drill. The 'hammer' attribute of the drill is utilized for drilling into concrete, so it is handy for fixing gate posts etc.

Jig Saw: a jig saw can be hand held or bench fitted. The smaller, electric jig saw is ideal for cutting out irregular shapes, as the name implies. They do not cut swiftly so do not force them, but it is very important to use the correct blade. Although there is a 'universal' blade too, it is better to use the right blade for the task.

Router: the router puts an edge on a piece of wood. They can be fitted with diverse spinning, cutting bits to produce different types of beveled edges.

Nail Gun: nail guns use either electricity or explosive charges to fire nails into matter in one squeeze of a trigger. Nail guns can fire various sized nails to different depths with the appropriate strength of charge. They are excellent for repetitive jobs like roofing, plaster boarding and framing.

Electric Screwdriver: there are all the different sized bits you would expect to fit the various kinds and sizes of screws. The electric screwdriver is also perfect for recurring tasks. Screws are driven home very quickly with next to no effort on behalf of the operative.

Electronic Wire Finder: these little devices are really helpful if you are working in a house you do not know. They will help you find buried wires and timbers. The former to avoid and the latter to put a nail or screw into. It is very useful for hanging pictures and shelves on dry-lined walls.

There are quite a few other portable power tools used in wood working, but these are the most common by far. Twenty years ago, the electric tools in this list would have been powered by mains electricity, but these days most of these tools are rechargeable. If you buy your tools from one manufacturer, you will probably find that the batteries are transposable, which makes recharging a lot simpler.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with a favourite subject, cabinet woodworking plans.

Have you ever tried to build a small chicken coop? If you have, you will know that there is more to it than meets the eye.

Unless you are super handy and just formulate plans in your head, it is really hard to start hammering away and buying parts when you are not 100% sure about what you are going to need and how much. This is where I burnt my fingers. The thing is, constructing anything without a proper plan is simply setting yourself up for failure.

It took about 3 weeks before I hit check mate, and I had to decide whether to cut my losses and stop the project all together, or go and find some proper designs I would be able to work with which won't frustrate me to the brink of insanity. And so the quest began...it was not easy one I assure you. The main problem I was faced with, was that the majority of instructions and guides were written for experience carpenters or diy experts - my limited knowledge and understanding of the industry simply was not sufficient to comprehend all the terms, tools and requirements.

I decided to set down some criteria which I know I would be able to work with:

1) Simple, day by day instructions

2) Simple adjustable designs to suit all yard spaces and sizes

3) No specialised tools required

4) Parts and materials which are easily available

5) Logical and practical results in terms of egg collection

6) Easily accessable support if I get stuck

With these requirements in mind, I set off to see who could meet these demands. I will have you know, it was not simple. All the different guides and authors met some of the requirements but not all of them.

After a long and tiring search, I did find a design program that met my needs...and then some. In fact, some of the additional information it gave me, I only realised later, I would not have been able to succeed without. If you are contemplating building a small chicken coop, make sure you research the different options available and make sure that which ever plan or design you go with, is one that is workable for you. The secret of success is in the plan!

If you want to save yourself a lot of time and money, make sure you check out Gary Goldman's blog called designachickencoop.com, and chicken coop pictures to give you ideas and more than 50 designs and other money saver tips.

Many people like the notion of having a pool in their backyard. If you do too, you should understand that it takes either a lot of work or a lot of money to install. Then there is the incessant maintenance of the pool and its water. If you are concerned that you will lose all of your garden, there is no need, because you can design your pool so that there is a fair bit of vegetation incorporated into it. In fact, there are many designs you can use when landscaping for a pool.

When landscaping for a pool, you need to have a design to work to. You can either have a tailor-made plan drawn up for your backyard, you could make your own plan or you could use one out of a magazine. There is no reason why you can not create your own design. The best way to begin would be to get some concepts from landscaping magazines or other household periodicals.

The best way of going about landscaping for a pool is to draw the precise size and shape of your backyard on a piece of graph paper to scale. Plot in any immovable objects such as downpipes, a shed or septic tank. If that constrains the size of your pool too much, you can have these objects moved if necessary. Nothing is impossible, but it does add to the cost. Once you have sufficient space, you are all set to start planning.

Copy and modify drawings from periodicals by all means, but if you feel that you are not up to it, have the drawing made for you. A local architect can do it, or phone the local technical college and ask one of the lecturers or students to do it for you. It is not as expensive as you might think. If you have the design done for you, make sure that you have thought about what you want and make sure that the drawer knows about it.

If you want lots of flowers, it is best to have raised flower beds. This will stop your flowers from spreading too far and will allow you more control. The flowers will have to be quite resilient and resistant to chemicals such as chlorine. The atmosphere will be more humid around the pool as well.

You will need some sheltered area for when it is very hot. Trees are a good idea, but they can take a very long time to grow. Palms look fantastic by a pool, but some species can take five years to grow high enough. You could check out the possibilities of planting semi-mature trees or look for faster-growing varieties. In the meanwhile, you could construct a grass-roofed lean-to or some umbrellas.

Lighting is also an important consideration. The pool should be floodlit at night to prevent people falling in it at night, but not only for that reason, it looks good as well. Accent lighting on the plants and trees really brings atmosphere to the pool and these lights can be solar powered so that you can move them around should you want to.

Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on quite a few topics, but is at present concerned with outdoor accent lighting.

Pond size is not a simple matter. On your pond plan, it may be as simple as drawing a few lines, but in reality, the size of your outdoor pond will affect its every aspect. Think about it: a small pond is easy and cheap to build but in the long run, it will limit the amount of pond ideas you can try. Large ponds are more flexible, but you should be prepared for the time and money you have to invest in making, and eventually, maintaining the pond.

But that's only the practical side of pond sizing. Obviously, you also want to size your pond to make it look good. Scale your pond to match your property. The pond is a part of your garden and should blend in. You don't want it to be overwhelming large or negligibly small. The size should also match its purpose. If you want a formal pond, keep it small and neat. For the natural look, you want a large, sprawling pond.

Make Space for your Pond Life

Living things need space to grow. This holds true for plant and fish, alike. Build your outdoor pond large enough so that every organism living in it has a chance to live and breed.

Small ponds tend to get over-stocked which threatens your pond with stagnation and possibly even death. On the other hands, large ponds require a lot of plant and aquatic life; otherwise it looks ugly and bare.

Also size your pond according to your budget. Stocking your pond with fish and plants can be expensive. Don't let yourself fall into the trap of making a pond that you can't afford to finish.

Good Size Makes for a Healthy Pond

While equipment is often used to help maintain a pond, try to size your pond so that it can survive on its own. A properly sized pond should be able to maintain good circulation, temperature, and aeration for all the organisms in it.

If you have a small yard, you've got no choice but to build a small outdoor pond. The perks are that it requires less to build and maintain. But if you do have the space to spare, it's better to build a large pond, even if it's your first time. Large ponds are less vulnerable to problems, giving you time to handle them before they cause damage. A large pond also gives your room to grow as a pond builder.

In the long run, maintenance is made easier if you know more about how the pond's size affects it.

Pond Sizing Advice

You can save yourself a lot of hardship and frustration by choosing the right size for your outdoor pond. Ensure that you consider the size of your property, the amount of fish and plants you plan to have, your equipment and other such things. You could also take a few tips from your neighbors. What works for them will most likely work as well for you.

The same kinds and amount of mulching materials should be applied over garden perennials to give them the protection they need for winter survival. It is best not to apply mulch until after the surface inch or so of the ground is frozen because it then serves the important purpose of stabilizing soil temperatures, preventing rapid and sharp fluctuations that would cause "heaving" of plants and exposure to lethal temperatures.

Tidying Up

Another late garden activity that comes some time in November, if not earlier or later depending upon location and the weather, is the annual pre-winter clean up. This is important in connection with the controlling of insects and diseases as well as from the standpoint of good appearance.

Dead tops of perennials should be removed after they have been blackened by killing frosts. Annuals should be dug up and removed from the garden scene, root and all, because the larvae and eggs of most of the common garden insects winter over on the dead tops of plants.

Their removal and destruction will go a long way in reducing the annual threat from this source. Diseases, too, over-winter as spores on plant remains making it doubly important to remove all dead tops of plants.

Home growers of raspberries will find it worthwhile to lay the canes down and cover them with soil before the ground freezes. Just covering the tips, which is the method of winter protection usually provided by commercial growers, will be sufficient where a snow cover can be expected.

Strawberries must be "hardened" before covering them with a two-inch layer of marsh hay or straw. Plants like red emerald philodendron should be exposed to freezing temperatures before being covered but they should not be exposed to temperatures below 20 degrees.

Obviously, everything cannot be mentioned in this column, but one more comment is so important that it should be made: "Don't burn tree leaves." Save them for mulches under evergreens, trees and shrubs or for the garden, and put the surplus in a compost pile.

I fell in love with the effects of outdoor lighting at a wonderfully romantic restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. As I recall, the restaurant was called Cafe Des Artistes. We sat in the garden amongst whimsical art sculptures while carefully placed outdoor patio lights snaked up and down the trees. It was likely the first time I had seen rope lights before. I was enchanted. Since that night I have eaten in many other romantic restaurants and have admired the outdoor lighting but nothing compares with my first experience.

At my own house, I have tried to replicate the feel of bringing the indoors out which is what properly placed outdoor patio lights should do. I have met with moderate success and I love to experiment. In choosing your outdoor lights there are a number of things you should always consider. I have tried to list the 4 most important considerations below.

1. Determine the purpose of your outdoor lighting. Is the lighting going to be primarily functional and safety oriented or will it be more atmospheric? Some amount of outdoor lighting is needed for general safety. These bright outdoor patio lights should be placed at every door including your garage door. Other types of lighting can be simply for atmospheric effect. Lighting for effect can be dimly illuminated. Mood lighting should be changed about for greater dramatic effect.

2. Where to place your outdoor lights. Lights for atmosphere can be placed in trees shining down or at the base of trees shining up. You can high light any outdoor art you may have or a swimming pool. You can use rope lights to highlight trees or a fence in the distance or often lovely and simple white Christmas lights make a nice year-round romantic setting. As mentioned above, the lights for safety need to be by each door of your house at a minimum and it must be relatively easy to change the bulbs. If the light requires a 20 foot ladder to change, you might go months with a burnt out bulb and that is not at all safe.

3. Determine the type of light you want. These days cost and energy efficiency are important considerations in choosing a type of outdoor patio lights for your home. You could choose solar lights. Solar lighting is very popular and has been recently hyped. Solar lights require careful and cannot be counted on in cloudy or rainy areas. The most energy efficient and thus environmentally conscious is LED lights. These lights can be used as both safety lights and background effect lighting. The price of LED lighting is reasonable and these lights are often chosen.

Shady locations pose special problems when it comes to furnishing them with plants - problems that are challenging, but surmountable; problems that for happy solutions depend upon the selection of suitable kinds of plants.

Around the home, on porches, patios and terraces and in sunrooms and window gardens there, are likely to be places where light is comparatively poor, but such places really need decorative vegetation to provide a homelike, lived-in atmosphere. Wisely chosen plants provide the answer for successful decoration of such problem spots.

Here, we will take a look into the uses of foliage plants in and about the home, for they offer by far the largest selection of kinds that prefer or endure shade. And, best of all, the kinds will look right in shaded places - they are plants. that belong where light is subdued.

One of the subtleties of successful gardening is to employ plants and flowers where they seem to belong. Shaded places kept aglow with blooming plants call for constant replacements, and that means over-decoration. It is a happier solution to use plants that thrive in shade.

In most of the locations we are considering, the plants will be grown in pots or tubs or in movable or built-in boxes of one kind or another that currently are called "planters." Such container-grown specimens require adequate cultural care - attention in matters of watering, fertilizing and keeping them clean and free of grime and pests. In recent years the advantageous employment of artificial illumination for foliage house plants has received attention from experimenters, and positive recommendations may now be made with confidence.

Artificial lighting is of great help in compensating for lack of sufficient daylight. Foliage plants that are tolerant of poor light have been kept in good condition for a year or more by the use of electric light alone or of electric light with but the smallest amount of natural light.

Fluorescent light, or fluorescent light together with some incandescent illumination, is most satisfactory. Incandescent light alone, in adequate intensities, produces too much heat for the well-being of the plants.

Fluorescent light alone, on the other hand, tends to give a cold appearance that is less flattering to foliage plants than when used with some of the yellower rays of incandescent bulbs. This is something to consider if you are concerned with specially lighted displays of foliage plants in homes, stores, restaurants, offices or theaters. In the average home you will be more interested in making the best of the lights you already have.

The thing to remember is that any type of lighting like low voltage landscape lighting (other than ultraviolet ray lamps) benefits foliage plants that lack sufficient natural daylight. The more intense the light (provided a harmful amount of heat is not produced) and the more hours each day the plants are submitted to light the better they will be.

Experiments at Rutgers University established the fact that some foliage plants would remain in good condition for twelve months or more if they received as little as 25 foot-candles of light for sixteen hours each day. It should be noted, however, that the kinds that lived under these low intensities grew better and lived longer when the intensity of the illumination was increased to 50 foot-candles for sixteen hours each day. Also, additional kinds could be grown under these conditions. Still further improvement was noted and a still greater variety could be grown when the light intensity was held at 100 foot-candles sixteen hours each day.

In the average home, only rarely will artificial illumination equal these higher intensities. Recommended levels for reading are 20 foot-candles and for sewing or workbench illumination 40 foot-candles. The advantage you can gain from ordinary home lighting is the placing near lights at night of those plants that get no more than the minimum illumination for their kind from natural daylight. The combination of low-intensity artificial lighting at night and minimum or somewhat better than minimum light intensity during the day. will combine to produce the effect of stronger daylight or longer days.

Walls and fences of all dimensions are erected for any of many reasons - to define property boundaries, to create a center of privacy, to connect two areas or levels, even to break up small areas and make gardens seem larger. Fences can be used in place of trees and shrubs as background for a flower border, with spectacular vines as accent or subdued varieties for subordinate effect. And, of course, there's nothing like a good-looking fence or wall to obscure unattractive outbuildings, or necessary atrocities like the compost heap.

For fences and walls, again, vines are selected according to available sunlight, moisture, and other cultural considerations - and then according to decorative purpose. If the fence is in itself decorative, the vine should enhance, not smother it. Avoid rampant-growing types and choose, instead, restrained vines with delicacy and charm, and those that can be pruned and trained to shape. For ugly or tottering fences, select a fast, thick covering vine.

On low dividing or retaining walls, let the vine run along the top and tumble down the side - a climbing rose kept trimmed to one cane is extremely effective. Or select a slow creeper, like euonymous, and let it climb the side. Over old country stone walls, native vines - like the native clematis - are in harmony. A brick wall enclosing a formal garden calls for treillage. On small areas, use short-stemmed vines; for large areas, plant long-stemmed scramblers.

Vines as Ground Covers

Many vining or trailing plants will cover banks and keep soil from washing away; or will spread and carpet the ground in shady and other difficult areas. And vines are often the least costly and fastest growing plants for these purposes. But they should be used with caution and kept under control. Some types become serious garden pests. Most efficient for fixing sliding soil and covering steep or rocky banks are the varieties that hug closest to the ground and root at the leaf joints as they spread. Some annual vines can be used as ground covers for quick but temporary effect.

Vines as Garden Accents

These vines are selected for their specimen value - their brilliant, breath-taking flower display, even if only once a year. They are grown on pillars or other uprights in the border, or carefully trained against a background fence or wall.

Accents attract attention to the garden area and to themselves. They should be used sparingly and with regard for their fitness in their surroundings. Selected and placed without plan and design, they can be monstrosities. One accent vine - or two at the most - is plenty for a small or informal garden. A row of pillars can be used in larger, formal landscapes.

Pillars and posts should be in pleasing scale with their surroundings and the vines that cover them. Nonvigorous vines are most appropriate and easiest to control. There are climbing roses, for example, of restrained or "pillar" height; large-flowering clematis and mandevilla trellis plant can be combined with them to prolong the flowering season.

Properly placed and proportioned tree trunks can also be decorated with accent vines. On living trees, however, twiners may circle and strangle branches. Root-clingers are usually harmless and add interest to tall, unbranched trunks. If it has not been treated with creosote, an unsightly telephone pole becomes less offensive with a softening vine.

The majority of garden vines can be used as accent or specimen, if the selection is made with discretion and if careful attention is given to training and pruning.

It is easier to understand what unity does than to explain what it is. Any design - a small dish garden, cut-flower composition, living-room decor, patio planting, landscape - has unity if the whole hangs together to make one pleasing picture. Without unity a design "goes off in all directions," has a restless, disorganized, discordant effect.

Not quite the same as unity, but an important part of it, is harmony - a restful quality created when all parts of a design or decorative effect add up to one style or mood. An extreme example may illustrate the point. Setting an urn of clean, stark contemporary lines beside an ornate, Victorian garden seat would be inharmonious; each style is foreign to and unsympathetic with the other. But a low fence is in harmony with the rose that clambers over it; vining plants can unite harmoniously the upright plants in a window box with the box itself.

There are innumerable techniques for unifying a design, of which the following five are probably basic.

1. To have unity, a design usually has only one focal point or center of interest. For example, a vine or other planting and its container can be the object of interest against a wall; or the vine can be so arranged that it supports a center of interest, like a fireplace. Any attempt to use it for both purposes can result in either chaos or complete lack of interest.

2. To have unity, a decorative effect should be designed to hold the eye inside the picture. The flowing lines of vines are particularly effective here. Training a vine around a large window, for example, holds the eye and keeps it from wandering off.

3. To have unity, the elements of a design can often be arranged so that they interlock or overlap. Here again, vines are useful. Without a vine planted at its base, a tall shrub may seem entirely separate from the tub it is planted in; when a vine overlaps the container below and the shrub above, the two are tied together.

4. To have unity, the important parts of a design must be in pleasing relative proportion or scale. The vine selected to blend a shrub like yucca branched and its tub should be neither so small that the shrub overpowers it, nor so large and bold that it dwarfs the shrub.

5. To have unity, a design or decorative effect should be executed with restraint, moderation, good taste. Too many elements create a disturbing, helter-skelter, cluttered appearance. So a single wall bracket or hanging basket, or a matching or harmonious pair, is generally preferable to a varied assortment.

Create your own unity in the landscape with vines!

The best course of action to take sometimes isn't clear until you've listed and considered your alternatives to storage shed kits. The following paragraphs should help clue you in to what the shed experts think is significant.

Choosing the right size storage shed is very important. The size and styles of sheds are limited only by the room available and imagination. Choose a flat, clear, and easily accessible location, but also look for opportunities for the surrounding foliage or structures to add to the aesthetic appeal of your property.

Metal is usually preferred for gardeners who stay in a storm affected area or a hurricane affected areas. Metal is mostly preferred for those gardeners who stay in storm hit zone or hurricane affected areas.

If you base what you do on inaccurate information, you might be unpleasantly surprised by the consequences. Make sure you get the whole story on garden storage sheds from informed sources.

Wood offers the strength to withstand gusty winds and the weight of snow. This makes our wooden sheds an optimal choice for those living in areas subject to such weather conditions. Wood is the preferred material as it gives an aesthetic appeal. However wood needs to be treated for ultraviolet protection every year and sometimes treatment is also given for protection against pests and borers.

Metal anchor pegs provided - requires concreting into the ground. Height 230 x width 220 x length 400cms. Online Metal Sheds offer the 'Olympian' Steel Garage made from hot dipped galvanised steel with vents on the gables for clear airflow. Up and over roll up wide (252cm) entrance door with side personal door. Metal storage sheds and metal garages come in a wide range of sizes and therefore flexibility of use. The garden buildings and metal shed range is available within 10-15 working days and an added bonus is we have free delivery*!

Building your own shed gives you a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction as well? Buildings that use steel components like beams, columns, and steel sheets to build structures instead of using traditional building materials like wood, concrete, bricks are known as steel buildings. Steel buildings are tough, resilient, economical and have aesthetic appeal. Building a shed may be easier than you think, so why not give it a try.

There's no doubt that the topic of storage shed kits can be fascinating. If you still have unanswered questions about garden storage sheds, you may find what you're looking for in the next article.
