Teak Outdoor Garden Furniture
There are many different types of materials from which furniture that goes outdoors in the garden can be made. Although teak is not only one of the most expensive materials from which outdoor garden furniture can be made it is also one of the most popular. In this article we look at some of the reasons why teak outdoor garden furniture is so popular.
Reason 1 - Teak wood has a large amount of rubber in its structure and this makes it naturally resistant to what the elements are likely to throw at it from wind, water, heat and frost. Also because it has its own natural oils inside the wood this makes it resistant to damage by insects as well. This is a very durable wood and can cope with all kinds of weather and won’t need much maintenance over the years.
Reason 2 - Teak wood does not actually require any type of oils or polishes to be applied to the wood unlike other furniture to keep it looking great. However, some people don’t like the color the teak turns after several years being outside so will apply a good teak oil to theirs.
However over extended periods of time the natural oils within the teak wood does become depleted and this may result in the surface becoming rough to the touch. Plus cracks may begin to appear in the wood and which can lead to mildew and fungus growing within it. So although you may not feel that yours needs to be maintained if you want it to last for many years to come you should do so. Below we look at how you should care for your teak outdoor garden furniture.
Reason 3 - As unlike other woods when it comes into contact with metals teak does not allow rust or corrosion to form and which could actually effect the furniture’s stability. Therefore combining teak and metal means that you can opt for a more unique style of garden furniture if you want.
Reason 4 - It is much easier to look after garden furniture that has been made using teak than other types of wood or metal. To care for yours you need just to wash it down regularly with some warm soapy water and a scrubbing brush. But if you have several pieces of teak garden furniture that need cleaning then using a high pressure sprayer on its most gentle setting instead.
However if the wood has become too badly weathered and mildew has become to appear then this must be removed prior to the wood then be finished. There are specialist products you can use which enable you to thoroughly clean down your teak wood garden furniture making sure that all dirt and other micro-organisms are removed. However, to use these you need a good pair of sturdy gloves and work should be carried out in a well ventilated space and away from areas where damage could be caused by the products being used.
After the teak wood has been thoroughly cleaned then it needs time to dry out completely and this may take several days and only after this can a teak sealer be applied. There are various different types of teak sealants available for use on teak outdoor garden furniture some being applied using a foam brush whilst others come in a spray application. However, whichever one a person uses they allow the wood to absorb as much of the sealant as it needs and no more. Always two coats should be applied one after the other and following the second coat any excess sealant should be removed using a clean cloth.
