Ninety-five years ago in Nagoya, Japan, The history of Makia power tools begins. Makita Electric Works started its repair business for electric tools and equipment. The business stayed in Nagoya until the mid-1940s when it moved to Anjo City in an attempt to move away from the air raids of World War II. Anjo continues to be the home office location.

Originally, a repair company for electric tools and equipment, Makita stayed as such until 1958. After this time, the business expanded into the manufacturing of power tools. Four years later the enterprise offered a public stock option to help fund the diversification of the business.

Makita has built its reputation on being innovative, quality minded, and by having extremely strong brand recognition. Moreover, direct sales propelled Makita into the top selling power tool company in Japan. Through an important feedback loop between retail stores, individuals, and Makita, the corporation was able to have a strong research and development division that kept Makita improving old technology and innovating new technology.

Expansion in Europe and overseas took Makita worldwide and increased their sales dramatically. Just before the 1980s, the business had acquired nearly twenty percent of the world market for power tools. However, because of how reliable the tools were and the market saturation, sales figures dropped by double digits in the early nineteen eighties. Here Makita made good on its research and development history by introducing the first cordless power hand tool. Thereby opening a brand new market for which they had the only product for the time being.

Expansion continued into the 1990s. All phases of the corporation were opening in different world hubs to increase distribution and keep up with manufacturing. Repair was still part of the corporation and service expanded too. Early in this decade, Makita held 50% of the entire United States power tool market. This would be the highest magnitude of success Makita would experience to date.

As competitive companies challenged the market share of Makita, the owners did not alter any operations. This proved near fatal for the company seeing net income drop from 79 million USD / 9.8 billion JPY in 1993 to 1 million USD / 133 million JPY in 2002. It was through cutting operational costs that the company was able to return to profitability.

The history of Makia power tools mirrors the vast changes in the economic eras during the last 95 years. Yet, the business still survives and its brand is held in highest regard for quality and craftsmanship. Power tools alone account for 70% of Makita's net sales and 80% are sold outside Japan's boarders.

Get the low down on everything you need to know about Makita power tools now in our overview of top Makita construction tools .

Spring has arrived and one of the things that dominates the minds of many homeowners is home improvement. Unfortunately the gears are turning so fast it's hard to decide where to start, what to do and where to put the priorities. If you know you're due for some updates to your home but you're not sure where to start then here are some great ways to avoid idle hands. Start with these popular home improvement ideas for the changing seasons:

1. Check out the roof - Leaks can seem to come out of the blue. With all the heavy rain this year be sure to thoroughly inspect your roof to insure that you won't have costly damage later. Check for missing or loose shingles and gutters that have seen better days. Don't forget to check the flashing, chimney if you have one, and the roof vents.

2. Inspect your Windows - Windows tend to be overlooked, but they are important for the beauty and integrity of your home. The freezing and thawing through the winter could damage the window in even minor ways. Start by checking your windows for proper caulking and any cracks or improper operation. You may also want to check for mold and mildew that may being to grow as a result of failing weather proofing.

3. Replace Windows - Even if your windows are in good shape you should consider an upgrade. New energy-efficient windows are designed to save you on utilities through improved insulation while also protecting your home from intense UV rays with new coating technology. Keep the heat out in the summer and the heat in during the winter with Low-e coatings, double and triple pain windows, etc.

4. Examine the Siding - If you've got vinyl siding and you live in the colder climate regions then you need to inspect your siding. Vinyl becomes brittle when temperatures drop and can easily be damaged. For other more durable types of siding, check for flaking or peeling paint, missing or loose pieces, etc.

5. Check your Foundation - Ground can shift and settle during the winter and become saturated as the snow melts, causing the soil to sink further and hang on to excess water. Check the foundation around your home and the direction of water runoff. Ensure that water can still plane away from your home and that it's not pooling near your foundation.

6. Check your Ceiling - The ceiling in your home can be like a looking glass into your roof's condition too. Check in odd places that aren't seen in normal everyday living such as closets. If you spot any damage, climb into your attic for further investigation. This would be a great time to look over the condition of your insulation too.

Your attic is the barrier between you and the outside world, protecting you, your loved ones, and your investments. Work with a local contractor if you are thinking of home improvements in your attic. He or she can help you decide to install a radiant barrier. This is a type of foil insulation that is used in conjunction with typical insulation and blocks over 90% of heat that can be lost through your attic. These small projects can keep you happily busy while providing some loving care to your most treasured place.

Whether you want a simple design or custom Virginia Home Improvement, we work closely with you to stick to your dream designs. Consult with a contractor today to talk about your next remodel - from windows to a newly remodeling Washington DC Basement.

One of the most common welders is a MIG welder. The Mig Welder uses Gas Metal Arc Welding which works by a wire which is fed through a welding gun. The wire is the electrode. At this instant shielding gas is flowed through which protects the weld while it is setting and cooling down.

For this type of welding carbon dioxide is most commonly used, one because it is the cheapest and two, because it makes great weld. Argon is also used because it makes a great mixture with carbon dioxide. This creates less "spatter" which in turn makes the weld more cleaner. Using argon has alone will create the best weld with aluminium.

The GMAW method has a lot of advantages over other welding processes. One for instance is the fact that the welding gun has a trigger which controls the position of the electrode so that you do not accidentally hit an arc. Once the gun is in the right place you simply put on your helmet and hit the trigger to start welding.

Thinner metals and welt sheet metals are best suited for MIG welders because they can be operated at a much lower voltage than other welders. Using an alternating current will not give you a steady arc when welding which is why MIG welders use a DC current. Using inert shielding gases will make the welds smooth with no slag to chip.

The tensioner on the wire is variable and you can also control the flow of the gas with a valve. Also adjusting the voltage of the MIG welder as well as the power as the wire feeds through is very useful for creating clean welds.

You can use a mig welder without shielding gas, and this is called flux cored arc welding, FCAW. There is an option of switching the polarity of the arc for the flux cored wire. The process requires that the wire has a hollow core filled with flux for better effectiveness.

As someone who is considering building and designing a home of your own, you need to understand a few vital factors. At first, you'll face a lot of challenges. You'll also need to establish your financing. Also, be prepared to face the hurdles you'll encounter as the job progresses. While the process of building a home isn't easy, it's genuinely rewarding once you're successful.

Building and designing a custom home is a project of great magnitude, so spend a lot of time researching this endeavor before you start. It can be quite a daunting project, and there are many potential problems as the process evolves. Flexibility is key when factoring in financing, timetables, contractors and all the other components of building and designing a custom home, but remember these are the keys to making your dream materialize.

Initially, you want to obtain many different cost bids for building your home. The more bids you have to choose from, the more likely you will be able to build a home within your budget. In addition, you need to hire an experienced individual who can be a liaison between you and all the other workers you will need for building.

Anyone who is considering building their own home will need to talk to many people about various aspects of the project. It's likely that most of the different types of work to be done will require individual contractors. You'll probably need one contractor to lay the foundation, and others to put up the walls, and install windows, gutters, plumbing, electricity, and more. You can see how easily this can get complicated! For the best results, take lots of bids from lots of contractors, then compare them to find the best deal.

So, should you really undertake this type of construction project by yourself? Can you handle something this monumental? Yes, you can definitely accomplish this project with smart planning and preparation. Even before the foundation is set, you need to establish a clear and concise plan of action - all while maintaining a certain degree of flexibility. Actually, one of the best possible tips for constructing a house is to stay flexible. You can also use the Internet to research some excellent software, plans and programs to aid you in your progress!

While green building is becoming increasingly popular, it isn't something which many of us know how to accomplish. For instance, what qualifies a building as being green, and how are engineers and architects improving the state of the art to be more environmentally friendly? Here are some key aspects of green building, and how to accomplish them.

The most important criteria when evaluating a green structure is energy efficiency. Use of environmentally friendly and recycled materials is certainly important, but the majority of a structure's environmental impact will arise not during its construction, but rather during its years of use. Just what constitutes energy efficiency is a subject of great debate, so individual research is required to decide what is most important to you.

For many kinds of buildings, energy performance can be rated on a scale of one to a hundred. This allows the buildings to be compared to similar ones. If a building rates more than seventy-five on this scale, it may qualify for the EPA's Energy Star rating, just like more familiar Energy Star rated appliances. Builders who would like to get this rating on buildings that are in the process of being built can use the EPA's Target Finder to establish a target for their project's energy performance. This Target Finder can also be used for building renovations meant to improve a structure's energy efficiency.

By entering an estimated energy consumption, a performance rating on the system's construction is generated. Excellent examples of green design are eligible for special recognition by the EPA.

Of course, if you're interested in green building, it's important to have an effective policy to create these structures. A good green building policy needs to use simple, standardized metrics for measuring energy use in every phase of the design, construction, and operation of the building. New buildings need to be designed to meet local energy codes, but shouldn't stop there. Instead, designers should try to get them to meet aggressive energy targets and be much more efficient.

Remember to verify that the target is being reached during building and operation. Many organizations forget to check to see if their goals are actually being met! This is an important feedback loop that will help designers create more effective green buildings. In general, a green structure needs to be less expensive to own in the long run, conserve water and energy, provide health and save environments, and promote good care of the environment.

Green building is a complex area of study. To do so well and efficiently, it is essential to learn as much about the subject area as you can in order to make effective decisions with the greenest outcome.

by John A. Moore

I need something to keep my cars in. I just bought a house, and unfortunately it came without any storage buildings - no two car garage, no carport, not even a carport cover. I don't regret buying the house, since we got a good deal. At the time we bought, I even said we are saving enough money to build a nice garage with the money we saved off our original budget. However, I am trying to decide if a carport will be sufficient, which will save us even more money.

Time is a bit of an issue in our decision. We definitely want to get our car storage up and completed before it starts snowing, which gives us about two months to build. That is more than enough time to put up a carport, but if we decide on a garage, then it will be cutting it close.

The first and most important decision to make is whether the new structure will be a carport or a garage. I can see the pros and cons with types of vehicle shelter. When it comes down to it we are deciding whether the structure will be with walls and a door or without walls and a door. My wife is leaning towards having a garage while I am content with a carport.

No matter what, a carport is going to be cheaper, easier and faster to build. Building a closed carport will add a bit of time and cost, and might be a good compromise. Adding a structure to the property is going to raise my property taxes, and a garage will cost more in taxes. Perhaps not a significant amount per month, but in the grand scheme, it may be significant by the time we want to retire and we could have put that money into rrsps. One more pro for a carport in my opinion is the simplicity of it, meaning we probably won't pack it full of junk and clutter like we might do with a garage.

There are definite pros to having a garage though. The complete weather protection is a big item, it would be much nicer for loading and unloading the car in the winter. Also it is more secure - a lot harder for anyone to access the cars. Extra storage (although I dread junk) is also a benefit, and perhaps the extra (secure) storage that a garage would allow would warrant the larger building, maintenance and tax expenses. The last point my wife suggested is having a garage would cut down on heat loss as we enter and exit the house from the garage door in the winter time.

We know we need to get something up to keep the snow off the cars this winter and time is running out. Either a garage or a carport would serve the basic need for weather protection (for us and the cars), the only thing left before we start constructing one or the other is to decide whether the extra benefits of a garage are worth the extra time and money.

About the Author:

There are plenty of carport options (open carport, closed carport, carport covers, carport awnings) available, so take some time to reaseach all of them before deciding on one of the carport options, or a garage, for your extra storage. Each comes with its own pros and cons; you just need to decide which suits your particular situation the best.

Steel Windows are the architect's choice for just about every kind of building. Steel windows are incredibly versatile, in that they can evoke both a modern and bold look, or conversely give the feel of classic style. In this article, we will discuss the five key benefits of choosing steel windows for your building -- whether it be a home, commercial structure, hospital, school, or public building. These benefits are narrow sightlines, strength, versatility, lifecycle, and fire rating. When you are finished reading, you will have all the information you need in order to decide if steel windows are the solution for your building.

The first benefit, narrow sightlines, is a good reason to choose steel windows. This is a quality most people associate with steel windows. For this reason, architects over the centuries have used them in every kind of building. This great quality, which is characteristic of steel windows, allows architects to design different architectural building styles which are complemented by the narrow sightlines. It is possible to design a building with minimalism architecture because of the steel's massive and incredible strength. No other materials offer this advantage, such as aluminum, vinyl, or wood framed windows because they would not be able to offer the support and still have narrow sightlines. Steel windows offer the ability to design a unique and distinctive looking building.

Strength, the second benefit, is a primary reason that architects love steel windows and they are three times stronger than aluminum framed windows. They are capable of holding glass panes of immense size because of this feature and still maintain the narrow sightline appearance. Ventilators can be used and the steel window still maintains its integrity and any hardware attached to steel windows is easily maintained.

The third reason to choose steel windows is the versatility of the material. Whether the building has a Gothic theme, is a more traditional structure, or highly modern, steel windows complement the look of the building's exterior and interior. Municipal buildings, churches, universities, private homes, commercial buildings, manufacturing facilities, transit terminals, hospitals and retail establishments have all benefited from using steel windows.

Steel windows offer a long lifecycle in comparison to other types of windows and original steel windows in century old buildings, such as buildings in Europe, are evident of this inherent benefit and require little maintenance or upkeep to maintain their attractive appearance.

In the United States, steel windows are still fully functional in the buildings that they were installed in, after three generations of installation time. If steel windows are replaced in these buildings, it is normally because of other things besides the functionality such as defective glazing, ventilator technology, or finishing. Steel windows are able to stand up to decades of environmental factors, as well as structural load, virtually unscathed.

Steel windows offer an excellent fire rating, which is the fifth reason that many architects choose them. There are a variety of designs which are fire rated by independent laboratory testing for the manufacturers of steel windows. This fire rating applies to fixed pane windows, as well as custom designed and operable steel window designs by different manufacturers.

Steel windows should be considered an excellent window option for any type of building due to narrow sightlines, strength, versatility, lifecycle, and fire rating. Many architects choose steel windows to complement many styles of unique building designs for these reasons.

With new home construction on the rise, there is no shortage of new and innovative designs. When we drive around some neighborhoods we cannot but help noticing how the builders of these structures have gone all out in making their homes unique and competitive.

We now have homes in almost all shapes and sizes. Even people with existing homes have joined the fray. Since they cannot outright demolish their homes and reconstruct, they make a spirited attempt to modify their homes using innovative techniques. One of those techniques is using glass blocks.

Glass blocks as building blocks are not necessarily that new. They have been around for some time but they have become more prevalent in recent times as more and more people discover their inherent advantages. Glass blocks are not made of regular glass as there are many types of glass.

Rather, they are made out of what is called tempered glass which is a specially made to specially-treated glass that is heated to certain degrees and then left to dry. This produces a type of glass that is more resilient than regular glass and can even be as hard as marble. This makes this a very attractive building material. Glass blocks have several advantages that make them an attractive building option.

A great advantage of glass blocks is that they are very attractive. This is because they are translucent and allow light to enter into the room. This ensures that the people inside the building have a partial view of the outside..

What makes glass blocks attractive is the fact that they allow light in without necessarily being brittle. We normally associate glass with being brittle and delicate as with drinking glass. The same is not the case with glass blocks. These can be set to allow light while at the same time be as hard as marble. They can even be set to allow some light and not all, meaning that they become translucent rather than totally transparent. This can allow light to enter into the building without necessarily compromising privacy.

Another reason that makes glass blocks attractive is their resilience. We mentioned this before; that they are made out of treated glass which is enhanced with the addition of increased chemicals and moderated heat levels to create a glass substance that is hundreds of times stronger than regular glass. In the event that is cracks and breaks, it does not shatter the way regular glass does. Who would not want a strong glass block to form part of their walls at home or at the office which is very beautiful to look at and also very strong?

Glass blocks, because they allow a lot of light into the room, contribute to reduced power bills. This is because with the block, there is less artificial light required since the room can now be lit with natural outdoors light.

Many people are ignoring the fact that lighting is a vital part of any room. They don't see how important it is to have good lighting in places where they accept most of their visitors. They don't even realize how necessary it is to have good lighting in places where they do work like preparing food and other stuff. This is a sad fact that can be addressed easily.

Putting up several lighting equipment in different parts of a single room might sound too extravagant and even too much. But we don't have to buy industrial powered lighting equipment to do the job that we're looking for. You can buy several small light bulbs with low voltages and put them up in some corners that would otherwise have been dark.

If you're planning to do a re-lighting project for your kitchen, you need to consider the points that you want to give emphasis too. You will need to put a good light source that lights the place where you do your cooking. You can put up small light bulbs as spotlights to special pictures you want your visitors to notice. There are so many things you can do with lighting.

The kind of light that you choose for the room dictates the overall feel of the room. It's so important it can actually reverse a room's mood when used improperly. Knowing which kind of lighting you need is very important if you're planning a remodeling project for your kitchen.

It's also very easy to install that you can do it yourself. You can save yourself a world of trouble if you just buy a couple of low voltage bulbs and install the lights inside your home yourself.
